During the COVID-19 pandemic, many artistic departments at the University of Washington sought ways to conduct classes while adhering to health and safety restrictions. The choir department, in particular, required a platform to facilitate their weekly sessions. As the Lead Product Designer, I was responsible for creating a solution that enabled the sharing of audio files and instructions with students, allowed students to upload their MP3/MP4 files, and supported the broadcasting of end-of-quarter concerts.
As a Product Designer for the University of Washington’s choir platform, I played a key role in developing a digital solution that met the unique needs of the department during the COVID-19 pandemic. I designed a user-friendly platform that enabled seamless sharing of audio files and instructions with students, provided a space for students to upload their MP3/MP4 recordings, and supported the live broadcasting of end-of-quarter concerts. My work ensured that the choir could continue its educational and performance activities while adhering to safety protocols.
By creating the website, this contributed to this program becoming one of the most successful in the music department at the University of Washington.

In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the University of Washington’s choir department required a robust platform to facilitate online learning and virtual performances. The project was defined with three core objectives: enable seamless sharing of audio files and instructions with students, provide a user-friendly interface for students to upload MP3/MP4 recordings, and support the live broadcasting of end-of-quarter concerts. The goal was to maintain the integrity of the choir’s educational and performance activities in a fully virtual environment.
We employed agile development methods to brainstorm and conceptualize solutions that would meet the needs of both faculty and students. Collaborating with a cross-functional team of business analysts, developers, and designers, we explored various design ideas, user flows, and technological approaches. Key considerations included ease of use, efficient file management, and the ability to integrate automated processes. AI-powered solutions were proposed to optimize file storage and organization, ensuring the platform could handle large volumes of data without compromising on user experience.
The development phase involved iterative cycles of design, coding, and feedback. We built the platform with a focus on functionality, user experience, and scalability. The file upload and naming/sorting process was updated to enhance efficiency, allowing students and instructors to manage their content effortlessly. AI was integrated to automate the file storage process, categorizing and organizing uploads systematically to keep the class environment as organized as possible. Throughout implementation, we maintained close communication within the team to ensure alignment with the project’s goals.
Once the platform was functional, we conducted extensive testing to identify and resolve any issues. This included technical testing by developers and user testing with actual students to gather critical feedback. The insights gained from user feedback were invaluable in refining the platform, leading to updates that improved the file upload process and overall usability. We focused on ensuring that the final product met the needs of its users, providing a smooth and efficient experience for both students and instructors.
